blog post 10

I'm A papermate. I'm a ticonderoga.

The message that I received from this picture post was amazing.Pictures say a thousand words in this post. My understanding of this picture is that schools and parents need to invest more into their children's education.Going the cheaper way will only cost you money in the long run.Although Paper-mate is cheaper, it just doesn't last as long as the Ticonderoga brand. If schools would invest in technology product such as computers and tablets, they would end up saving money in the long run. Buying paper and books cost a lot more because when new information comes out, they cant use the same book they have to pay for more books;Computers would save money because everything is done electronically.

Why are your kids playing games?

"Why are your kids playing games" is about a teacher being coached by his boss for playing educational games instead of teaching.I think more teachers should be more like this teacher. Students tend to learn more whenever they are having fun and become involved in the lesson.Feeding children information from a text will do nothing for them. With this type of teaching students will only remember the information long enough to pass the test, they will not learn the information. Hands-on learning helps students understand the concept and learn the lesson easier. I would much rather play a game involving a lesson than do worksheets.I believe that worksheets are just busy work and they don't teach students anything.
Mr. Spencer is a great writer. I viewed his blog and found another interesting blog post entitled "10 Points on Pencils".Mr. Spencer addresses the school Superintendent about why he doesn't use pencils in his classroom. A few of his reasons for not using pencils remind me of edm310.Just like Mr. Johnson we don't use paper or pencil in edm310. All of our learning is do on computers.Pencils and paper are played out just like the chalk board. Technology is allowing use to learn the same material as before with using up natural resources.Mr. Spencer made a good point when he stated that children are learning even when they are using technology to pass notes and communicate with each other. I agree with him because the students are still learning. Taking cellphones and tables out of the classroom is not the answer to solving this problem. Students are still going to find ways to bring these items to school. Most kids own cellphones and tablets.Schools should use this to their advantage and allow kid to use them to learn with.

Don’t teach your kids this stuff. Please?

I can really relate to this blog post. I think that all teachers should view the post by Mr. Scott. Many school are afraid of technology in their classrooms because they are afraid of what students might do with it.Many people are missing out on all of the great things that technology has to offer because they are worried about the negative parts of it. These people should spend more time worrying about the positive aspects of technology. Technology is not always bad. Technology can open a doorway to a whole new type of learning.

What I've Learned This Year (2008-09)

(May 27, 2009) What I've Learned This Year (2008-09) by Joe McClung contains pointers that I will utilize as I go into my first year of teaching. Mr. McClung shared a few helpful things that he learned his first year of teaching. A few things that he shared with us is: How to Read the Crowd,Be Flexible,Communicate,Be Reasonable,do not be Afraid of Technology,Listen to Your Students, and never stop learning.
How to read to the crowd helped me understand how important it is to focus on the student when you read to make sure that they are comprehending what you are reading. Mr. McClung says not to focus on yourself and how you read. Our lessons should be student-centered. Another lesson he learned that year was to be flexible with his students. He learned that things don't always go as planned. I agree with him when he said, "there is no perfect lesson". I find this to be true for a lot of other things as well. No matter how much I plan an event something different always seem to happen. Mr. McClung learned that he couldn't always control things. He had to learn to accept that he couldn't control everything and to just do the best that he could with a smile on his face. I think this is a good way to look at things that you can't control. My motto is to do the best that you can and don't worry about the rest.
Mr.McClung learned that the best way to solve workplace drama or feuds is to communicate with others. Many issue can be worked out if people simply talked with each other in an adult manner. He also learned that communication helps you build strong relationships with other teachers. He learned to be responsible when he set goals for his students. He also informs us not to set our expectations too high when it comes to our students.I agree with his reason for not doing this.We don't want to get mad when our students fail and lash out at them.Teachers are supposed to help guild students in the right direction and not fuss at them when they don't meet our set goals.
He explains that technology is something that has to be learned over time.He also encourages us not to get mad and give up when we don't understand something. Technology can be helpful once we learn how to use it. There is no reason to be afraid of it. He learned that teachers can build respect in student-teacher relationships by listing to their students.I believe that students are more willing to learn and behave when they feel like the teacher listens to their ideals.
Last but not least Mr.McClung learned that if he wanted to be a good teacher that he must never stop learning. He believes it is never to late to change or learn new things.

What I Learned This Year – Volume 4

In the 2011-2012 school year, Mr. McClung learned two themes about teaching. In the 2011 school year he learned not to be concerned with what his peers thought of him. The only thing that mattered to him was that his students liked him and were having a good time in his class.People's opinions shouldn't worry you.Everyone needs to take advice from Mr.McClung and forget what others have to say about the way that you are doing something. The only thing a teacher should worry about is their students. He also learned to not get to comfortable with the way that you teach because it will show. Always try to learn new things and introduce them to your students.Learning new things will keep you from losing your touch and falling into a boring routine.

Productivity Tools for Educators
This blog was written by Jeff Delp a junior high principal. He believes that technology should be used to improve productivity and help people assess important information. Mr. Delp also believes that schools are wasting money and natural resources by printing copies.
I strongly agree with him. The technology of today world allows us to use computers and internet to interact with others instead of using paper. Using internet to communicate with others can help save trees and money. This is clearly a better alternative to buying expensive ink and copy paper. He also believes that modeling good technology will lead to better students. It is also the teacher’s responsibility to model good use of technology when teaching the class.
Technology can be used for managing tasks and duties. Mr.Delp listed six tools that he uses on a daily base to help model technology usage for his teaching staff. He usage of Google Docs, Ever note, Drop box, Wunderlist, Prosperous and Twitter help him stay organized.

1. Google Docs- This is an app that people can go to and collaborative documents together. Many people can work and make changes to the same document. It can be assess from any computer and is always saved. So there is no more worrying about losing your flash drive. The sharing options make it easy to collect, organize and collaborate on documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

2. Evernote - is like a big filling cabinet. It can also be used to capture and save images to your computer. Ever notes are also a great way to take notes.

3. Dropbox- can be used to save project. This can keep people from lugging around papers all of the time. Drop box even allow people to share files with others.

4. Wunderlist - This is a task management tool. This app collects information that you give it and sort it into different list. Lists may be shared with others so that teams may work collaboratively on the same tasks.

5. Posterous - is a blogging platform that allows people to share ideal and conversations to enhance professional development. Posterous is a great platform for beginners.

6. Twitter - is a social media tool that can be used to engage if conversation with other schools and educators.

MY RESPONSE

Hi MR. Delp,
I am currently a college student that is in need of some time management skills. I found a few of the source that you listed to very helpful. I was already aware of twitter and drop box. The other three sources are new to me and I plan of making good use of the right away. Ever note caught my attention the most. I love the fact that you can take notes with it. Ever notes can help save me a lot of money on paper and is better for the environment. This will help me stay organized because I will be able to just go right to the computer and find my notes instead of flipping throw pages.

Staying Plugged In
Mr. Depp tries to stay current on the latest technology. He also encourages his staff members to take appropriate risk when they are teaching. Mr. Depp tries to make his decision based on the needs of his students and staff members. This is not always easy for him, at times he the struggles with decision making. In other for him to be a good effective Principe he has to be able to balance several task at the same time.

As a principle Mr. Depp is responsible for many task such as hiring people, paperwork, school meeting, budgets, etc. Although, he is responsible for this task he also is responsible for many other. His most important task is to make sure that he stays connected in the classroom with the teachers and students. He needs to be able to relate to his teaching staff. He can do this by sitting in the classroom during lecture and taking notes. Sitting in the classroom will give him a chance to truly understand teacher’s daily challenges.

MY RESPONSE

I never really thought that Principles had to do so many tasks at one time. Reading your blog post about staying plugged in has really made me realize just how important principles are to school. I don't think just anyone could become a principle. It takes a special type of person to be a principle. A principle should be organized, nice, caring and current on all new forms of technology.

School's out Friday

School’s out Friday is a blog post that is about Felix Baumgartner's. He is a sky jumper that is sponsored by red bull to jump out of planes. The coolest part about this post is that two video were posting of sky jumping. One post was about a human jumping and the other was a reenactment with Lego’s of the first video. The second video had Lego jumping out of the plane. The teacher also goes on to tell about an academic achievement day that they had for the students for her school. The school reward students for having good grades.

MY RESPONSE

I loved the reenactment of the Lego’s jumping out of the plane. It almost looked like the real thing. I also think that it’s great that your school recognizes students for having good greats. From a student’s point of view it’s wonderful to have your family and friend present to see you receive rewards for having good grades. I also agree that today children will be able to help shape the future of tomorrow.

BLOG # 8

THIS IS HOW WE DREAM PART 1 AND 2

Technology is forever changing and its very important that we try to keep up with it before it past us by. I own an laptop, computer and an droid that are becoming out dated as I type this blog. It amazes me how technology changes everyday. There is always a new version of something coming out to replace the old version. This is how we dream part 1 and 2 are great example of technology changing around me.
I agree with these videos, writing has changed, learning matters, and it is important to know how to research appropriately and synthesize what you have gathered effectively. Moreover, in order to demonstrate these relevant skills we should practice them.Since a little girl I have always been told practice makes perfect. In the videos there were several examples of how Dr. Richard E. Miller used virtual books or digital composing to gather information and display it publicly. He used pertinent images, audios, and beautiful colors to capture significant moments. Dr. Richard E. Miller shows how there are no limits to technology, and it continually grows before the eye.
After watching those videos, I feel that I would be great at creating collaborative documents, via internet. I will make it my duty to be an tech literate teacher. I will become skilled at multimedia. After I have mastered the process, I will then share it with my students so they can benefit, and began exploring and learning, as well.

Carly Pugh

I must say that I enjoy Carly's laid-back, reader-friendly writing style. Her Blog post #12 was intellectual, creative, and inspirational. In her post she had to create an assignment that she thought should be incorporated into EDM310. Her idea was to create a youtube playlist of at least 10 videos that encompass above all your teaching philosophy and incorporate what you have learned in EDM310. Then you would write a blog post about said philosophy and your playlist. What an appropriate post for teaching visual literacy! In the same way that Carly uses youtube in this post to convey her teaching philosophy, she could easily compile a youtube montage to teach future students. This technology and idea crosses disciplinary lines. It could be used just as easily by a Math teacher or a History teacher. Her post incorporates all the elements of a true visual document. One last note about Carly, Her post was amazing to watch because the blog background changed pictures.

Chipper Series and EDM310 for Dummies

I really learned a lot from these videos. A few good tips that I got from both of these blogs was that EDM310 is only as hard as you make it. Procrastination and looking for the "easy answer" will not cut it in this class. Also, one of the keys to success in EDM310 is to use the resources and tutorials provided. It's amazing how easy it can be to answer your own questions using the tools provided by the blog, facebook, and instruction manuals.Since enrolling in edm310 I have found the lab and it members to be quite helpful.Im not quite sure what I would create a video about as of now.Whenever I do decide I will make sure that It have bright colors and a helpful message that others can use.

LEARN TO CHANGE,CHANGE TO LEARN

The video had various professionals speaking on their insight of technology and how it is no longer a choice but it is required for producing productive citizens. One of the speakers made an interesting statement about how technology is not just for educator, it for everyone because technology is emerging quickly. Another speakers stated that " We should produce brave children". I loved this statement because that is my ultimate goal for becoming a teacher is to help create, and discover all children's unique abilities.

Scavenger Hunt on Web 2.0

The first tool I found was a video tool I had never used before called Animoto.
This site takes your photos, videos, and music and turns it into a unique video using what they call "Cinematic Artificial Intelligence," which is supposed to make each video take on the style of the selected music and images. Cinematic AI is also supposed to be like having a professional director and editor for your movie. Movies can also be done in HD and look professional because there is no Animoto label in the video. This site also provides a music gallery and a large style library that helps you set the tone of the video you are producing.

The second Tool I found was how to create poll anytime or anywhere. This tool allow you to Make your own poll voting question with Poll Everywhere.

The third tool that I found on this site was Photo peach.

The network student

I believe that students need teachers to answer questions that they cannot find online or just to point them in the right direction. Network teachers have an responsibility to help students learn. In today world students have a lot of outside source that can help the learn. These outside source can be helpful in helping students learn if they are used in the correct way. I believe that it is the teacher responsibility to teach the student how to search and find correct site to use. As technology advances teachers will no longer stand in front of class and give out boring lectures, instead they will be off to the side on the computers right along with students letting them figure out for themselves how to do an assignment and only stepping in on really difficult portions.Students will be force to learn things on there own without someone telling them.I believe that if you learn something on your own that it will stick with you longer.

On the other hand, I think that while this type of learning is just now getting off the ground it will still be in the first steps by the time I get in a classroom so I know that I will be getting used to it right along with all the other teachers and that hopefully if it does not work there will be a way for some teachers to stay in a traditional education setting.

Edm 310 is helping me get prepared for teaching children of the future.Just like the blog about the network student my teachers is also helping us learn how to learn. Dr.Strange is teaching our class how to blog about what we have learned and also how to research and use new tools. he don't always tell us how to do something instead the tell us about tools and sites that can teach us how to do it. We have to learn how to do some task on our on through trail and error. If we happen to get stuck he is there for us to offer advice that can lead us to solving our problem. In the beginning of the school year I thought that I would hate the class. Since i began to learn how to do project and other task on my own this has became my new favorite class.I love how excited I become when I figure something new out for myself. If I am going to become an effective teacher I will have to learn how to do new task on my own before I can ask student to do it.Technology is forever changing so I will be forever learning.

A 7th Grader's Personal Learning Environment (or PLN)
I believe this 7th grader is using technology to its advanatge. She has been taught to use and navigate through the internet and put her PLN together well. She has everything she needs a click away. It was really great to see someone else's PLN and see how they are using it to better themselves and learn. I think it was a well presented PLN. Keep up the great work.

Project 9 timetoast

blog post 6

In this video, Dr. Randy Pausch discussed several methods of teaching. At the beginning, he mentioned getting the fundamentals done first. Students need to understand that learning can be fun even though it is hard work. A student needs to learn his alphabet before he learns how to read or they need to know their numbers before they can do math.

In my opinion higher learning evolves from lower levels. This means that the small lesson must be learned in other to learn bigger lessons.

Mr. Pausch certainly have left an amazing legacy for himself, and I am quite thankful that I was able to watch it. Although he died at the age of 47 for cancer, he left a lot of wonderful lesson for us all. Their where numerous lessons that I learned while watching this video. The three most important things that I learned from that speech was to never give up, help others, and to be truthful.
In addition, I will be sure to incorporate other such lessons that Mr. Pausch mentioned, such as always bring something to the table, strive to have high expectations, never give up, show humility, and work hard. If all teachers were like Mr. Pausch, we would have less people dropping out of school, less people going to jail, and other positive situations would transpire out of his encouraging profound influence. I love the "head fake" teaching method . He also reminded me that you can't get any where far in this world, alone. For many years, that was my mistake, I truly thought that I didn't need any extra help, nor did I understand the great impact that my fellow classmates could have on my education. In essence, I will be sure to not only teach my students, but I will also learn from them, as well. Like the video, "The Last Lecture", I will teach by example meaning, I will show them I care for them first, then enforce positive actions, and then implement the same actions with in myself, every single day! I also enjoyed when he spoke about "keeping your child hood imagination alive". I loved this particular segment, because I am a fan of, "thinking big" and I have an awesome imagination. This type of attitude can become contagious in your classroom, which is exactly what we are trying to accomplish as future teachers. Overall, Mr. Randy is teaching us the values of good character skills, and who wouldn't want to be remembered by that significant title? Live right, sew good seeds, and you will reap great benefits, this was the main point that I gathered from this intense yet, adorable unforgettable moment. Life is short to let it go to waste.
